When publication metrics become the fetish: The research evaluation systems’ relationship with academic work engagement and burnout

Abstract In this article, we focused on the nature of relationship between research evaluation systems that are based metrics and those a critical comprehensive judgment scientific content with researchers’ burnout work engagement. The was conducted sample 1,191 Polish researchers in context highly metricized system. Our contribution to field is fourfold. First, provide empirical support for recent call more nuanced views publication evaluation, showing evaluations lacking associated higher demands lower job resources. Second, our study focuses attention various policymakers fact performance measurement should not be confused management thoughtless use might lead deterioration instead improvement. Third, findings illustrate tensions different as means evaluation; tension observed among their supervisors but also within community whole. Fourth, article may inspire further systems, design measures resources generated by system Job Demands-Resources theory.
